Classes, Demos & Talks

Interested in canning and preserving your own food, but not sure where to start?  Then join me for a class, demo, or talk!  Since 2010, I’ve been teaching in-depth, hands-on classes on home canning, as well as other methods of food preservation.  I also offer demonstrations on canning and preserving, as well as talks on the how and the why of food preservation.

My hands-on canning classes, called Fundamentals of Home Canning, cover safe home canning and preserving practices, tools and techniques, and during class we make and can one food item (ie jam, pickles, salsa, etc…) to really solidify your new knowledge in a hands-on way.  These classes are typically three hours long, and limited to 12 students so that there is time and space for everyone to get involved. At the end of class, you go home with a jar of what we made, a packet of information, and all of the knowledge needed to get started canning on your own.

I also offer a class called Fundamentals of Home Food Preservation, which is a series of four, three-hour classes, covering five of the primary home food preservation methods you’ll want to know to get started preserving food at home. We cover canning, freezing, drying, fermenting, and cold-storage (root cellaring), and each week we focus on a different method (or two), discussing proper procedures, techniques, food safety, and use of tools and equipment.  We practice the method(s) hands-on, preparing and preserving food as a group, and enjoying some samples as well. If you really want to dive in, become comfortable with multiple preservation methods, and learn a lot in a short time, this is the class for you!

Keep an eye on Classes, Demos & Talks 2025 for a listing of what’s coming up!  Please check back regularly, as I continue to add classes and events throughout the year. I’m also happy to arrange for private classes, demos, or talks, if you have your own group,  at a time and place that is convenient for you. Please get in touch for more information!
